OUTDOOR RECREATION

Motorsports, hiking, biking, fishing and golfing are just a few of the abundant recreational activities in Bristol.

Our mountains provide an opportunity to step back in time with a journey through geological wonders in year-round tours conducted by trained guides at the Bristol Caverns and Appalachian Caverns.  Both natural wonders contain formations created millions of years ago.

Nearby are the Cherokee and Jefferson national forests, providing 250,000 acres of unspoiled woodlands for hiking, camping and biking, while the famed Appalachian Trail lies minutes east of the city.

There are also more than 40 square miles of inland lakes and freshwater streams as well as a variety of city parks with public access. Additional outdoor opportunities include whitewater rafting on the Nolichucky River in nearby Erwin or golf at one of our six public golf courses.

Bristol is not only influenced by its unmatched natural beauty, but also by the excitement of top-notch motor sports events. Bristol is home of Bristol Motor Speedway, the "World's Fastest Half-mile Track." BMS, one of the five largest sports arenas in the United States, with more than 165,000 seats, annually hosts two NASCAR Nextel Cup-Busch Series weeks. From mid-November to early January, Bristol Motor Speedway illuminates the region for local children’s charities with its annual "Speedway in Lights." The holiday-light extravaganza features more than 100 displays, a Christmas Village, ice-skating rink, and more than 1.5 million lights. In addition, the Bristol Dragway hosts several regional and national drag-racing events throughout the year.

Bristol also serves as the home of the Bristol Sox, a rookie Appalachian Baseball League affiliated with the Chicago White Sox organization.

With the great number of recreational opportunities available throughout the year, explore each of Bristol’s four distinct seasons for yourself.
